Take-away food and drinks offer a more informal, quicker and cheaper way of eating. As a result, this method of serving food and beverages, with a long tradition behind it, is still commonplace today. Starting with the big cities, the food industry soon began to offer consumers take-away meals and drinks.
The packaging, designed to facilitate eating outside, also underwent major developments over the years, with Leslie Buck as one of its first exponents. Buck, the sales director of the Sherri Cup Company of Kensington (USA), was the inventor of the take-away cup, one of the symbols of New York. His Anthora take-away paper coffee cup was a container with a plastic lid to keep the drink warm. From the 1960s onwards, the take-away cup became a pop icon, a democratic symbol used by everyone, from executive directors to secretaries.
