THE ART OF TABLE LAYING IN HISTORY AND CULTURE

“The Castello Sforzesco attracts an extensive and diverse public. Our task is to provide an opportunity to visit the museum from a different perspective, taking alternative points of view into account”

Francesca Tasso, curator in charge of the Art Collection at the Castello Sforzesco in Milan, presents a set of knives that belonged to the Sforza family. The carving knife, which was the largest in the set, was used for cutting, while the smaller knives were used for placing morsels in one’s mouth.
Objects from the past, especially those used on a regular basis, are able to take us back in time, introducing us to customs far removed from our own. These knives help us to imagine sumptuous Sforza family banquets, at which the main utensil used for bringing meat to one’s lips was not a fork, but a knife with a sharp tip suitable for stabbing the morsel of food.
