THE ART OF TABLE LAYING IN HISTORY AND CULTURE

“The Castello Sforzesco attracts an extensive and diverse public. Our task is to provide an opportunity to visit the museum from a different perspective, taking alternative points of view into account”

Francesca Tasso, curator in charge of the Art Collections at the Castello Sforzesco in Milan, presents a service made by the Felice Clerici factory in Milan. The painted decoration features landscapes inhabited by characters from Italian Comedy, reflecting one of the most popular themes of the time.
In the 18th century, plates, soup bowls, basins and jugs were produced in large quantities, on a mass basis.
The middle classes, and no longer just the aristocracy, commissioned complete services for numerous diners. A study of these objects, which were both functional and decorative, enables us to learn about the history of production.
